The performances in an Xavier Dolan film are riveting without fail, and this one has a personal touch, being a semi-autobiographical film about a turbulent relationship of a young gay man Hubert (played by Dolan himself) and his mother (Anne Dorval).
Hubert, aged 16, fights with his mother. She drives him mad over the smallest things, and he can't stand her manipulating and guilt-making ways any more. Troubled by this love-hate relationship, Hubert lives out his teenage years whilst remaining nostalgic about his happy childhood.
We’re introduced to 19 year old Xavier Dolan with a bang with this directorial debut. Named Canada’s submission for best foreign language film at the Oscars in 2010, this explosive drama received a standing ovation at Cannes, winning the Director’s Fortnight prize. Critics call J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed my Mother) a “gay coming of age rebellion”. While the film displays unbridled anger and passion, Dolan’s artistry lies in his ability to lace all of the issues with comedy. A must-watch if you liked his later work like Laurence Anyways and Mommy.
