A body has been found in a state-owned forest, head and hands severed and burned. The victim being impossible to identify, Franck, the pathologist, visits the murder scene. The weapon used, discovered in the remains of the fire, is a tool used by foresters, lumberjacks and forest rangers.

The investigation into the body found in the forest, head and hands severed and burned, takes a new turn. Franck, the pathologist, has disappeared after learning that his sister Zoé, a forest ranger, has been kidnapped. The search now concentrates on Zoé's laptop that has just been located.
