Anton Kolig

Born in 1886 in Austria, Anton Kolig was close to the artists Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. He exhibited with the Vienna Secession group from 1910. Tortured by his bisexuality, considered scandalous at the time, Kolig celebrated the beauty and sensuality of the male body.

Bernard Buffet

Rigid lines, cold austere colours and a feeling of space... Born in 1928, the expressionist painter Bernard Buffet rapidly gained celebrity status and his works marked his generation. Scandalous, non-conformist with an artistic style many challenged, he committed suicide in 1999, leaving behind him some 8,000 canvases.

Berthe Morisot

The only woman in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, Morisot founded the Société Anonyme des Artistes Peintres, Sculpteurs et Graveurs with Monet, Renoir, Pissarro and Degas. This independent, radical artist with her limpid palette and radiant style was much criticised. At the time, there was rigid resistance to the recognition of women artists.

Édouard Vuillard

Édouard Vuillard became famous as a painter of portraits, realistic still life, domestic interiors, intimate scenes, panels for interior decoration and stage sets for the theatre. He was a founding member of the Nabi movement.

Gustav Klimt

Born in 1862, Gustav Klimt spearheaded the Vienna Secession and the Art Nouveau movement. He organised lines and colours within lavish ornamental settings, and used real gold in his paintings. His "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I" is one of the most expensive in the world.
