In 50 BC Caesar conquered Gaul. Its Romanization was a question of spreading the Roman lifestyle and building monumental structures. We visit three French cities home to some of the greatest treasures of Roman engineering.

In the heart of ancient Arles

During the conquest of Gaul, entire cities rallied the Roman cause without fighting, even enjoying the largesse of the emperors. A Unesco World Heritage site, Arles still bears witness to this past era: its amphitheatre a replica of the Coliseum, its circus one of the best known in Gaul.

In the heart of ancient Paris

With its 2,185 monuments, Paris is a world tourism capital. The City of Light also shelters ruins that bear witness to the Gallo-Roman period: a few metres from Place Monge, the Arena of Lutetia is amongst the oldest remains from these ancient times, along with the Cluny thermal baths.
