School: a matter for the state
Early in the 19th century the French government decides the people, viewed as savages always ready to revolt, should be educated. The message was clear: self-discipline was essential to building a nation. Secular, free, obligatory: the Commune invented the principles; Jules Ferry and the Third Republic launched the adventure.
