Stéphane Brizé’s heartbreaking story is a Palme d’Or nominee and Best Actor winner at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, and winner of the Ecumenical Jury Prize. With a strong and inspiring lead, this is a relevant film on how powerless workers can still be in the 21st century.
51-year-old Thierry is unemployed. Between pointless re-training and repeated humiliations, times are more than difficult. Together with his wife, he tries to keep what's most important: their apartment and the education of their disabled son. He finally manages to get a job as a security guard in a supermarket.
Vincent Lindon is a force to be reckoned with in the world of French cinema, winning the Best Actor Award at Cannes in 2015 for his powerful performance in this drama directed by Stéphane Brizé. Popular with critics in part because of the masterful performance, the film earns a 92% grade on Rotten Tomatoes. The Seattle Times promises that “Stéphane Brizé’s ‘The Measure of a Man’ feels so real, you’re almost startled when it’s over”.
The film is a classic example of France’s penchant for social commentary, offering realistic perspectives of the every man’s plight. The factory worker has been part of a long legacy that has been at the center of the fight for justice in many a film, and is often used to tell a far more relatable story than those of Hollywood.
