We are in Brittany in the sixties. Thomas Bréaud, aged ten, lives in a huge chateau surrounded by parkland. He has just lost his mother, and we see him by himself with his father, Jean Bréaud. Monsieur Bréaud employs a governess, Madame Vernet, with a son, Charles, the same age as Thomas, whose father is reported missing in Indochina. The meeting between the two elders is restrained, but not that between the two children.
