Daniel is the headmaster of a pre-school in Hernaing, near Valenciennes. Once wealthy, the region is now crippled by unemployment. One evening, a mother is very late in collecting her daughter, Laetitia. Bending to kiss her, she collapses drunk and, sick with shame, she flees, abandoning Laetitia and her baby...
