Biography
Nora Arnezeder grew up in Paris, but lived in Bali for a year, when she was14. She came back from Indonesia with only one idea in mind: becoming an actress. She trained at France’s equivalent to the Actor’s Studio: Le cours Florent. The school is responsible for many French talents over the years: Audrey Tautou, Isabelle Adjani, Pierre Niney, Gérard Lanvin and many, many more. After some work in short films, she landed her first roles in two popular French crime TV shows: Commissaire Valence and R.I.S Police Scientifique. She was then only 17. The year later, she was cast in her first feature, Les deux mondes, a fantasy comedy with Benoît Poelvoorde which was a surprising hit at the 2007 box-office in France.
Her career took a turn for the best in 2008 when she landed the title role in Faubourg 36. The romantic drama was directed by Christophe Barratier, who had just acquired world wide success with The Chorus (Les Choristes). Nora Arnerzeder was chosen among over 1000 of actresses: “Her singing audition was impressive. But she was also so convincing when she was asked to play comedy”, said director Christophe Barratier when he first met Nora. “She’s the kind of person who is full of doubt right before a take, but once the scene starts, she lights up and is the center of attention”. In Faubourg 36, Nora Arnzeder plays Douce, a young singer who brings back to fame a dying cabaret. The movie drew more than a million French spectators in theaters. It received many nominations, including 5 at the Césars ceremony. Nora Arnezeder was praised by critics for her acting but also for her delicate voice. She won the Lumière award for best new actress for by the Foreign press in France, as well as the Étoile d’or given by the French press. She also won the Young Trophy award for best actress, given every year by a jury to breakout artists in many disciplines. The title song of the movie, ‘Loin de Paname’, which is sung by Nora Arnezeder in the movie, was even nominated at the Oscars! But the French actress didn’t get the coveted statue, which was won by Jeff Bridges and Crazy Heart. This Oscar nomination was a game-changer for the actress, who was soon approached by producers and casting agencies in America.
At age 22, Nora Arnezeder decided to pursue her career in the U.S. and moved to Los Angeles. “I was just a bit tired of the Parisian life, plus I already had an agent in LA”, said the French actress in an exclusive interview with TV5MONDE USA. This decision will have proven to be the right one. Her first casting call in Hollywood was already successful! She landed her first role in a Hollywood movie in the 2012 action-film Safe House, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington. This was only the beginning. She was then cast in The Words, a romantic drama starring Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde. The same year, she also had one of the main roles in the psychological horror film Maniac with Elijah Wood.
Being in Hollywood didn’t mean she had totally stopped her acting career in France. In 2013, she was chosen for the role of Angélique, an iconic figure from the sixties in France. This original movie was an instant classic when it was released in 1964. So much so that four sequels of Angélique followed in the next five years. So when it was announced that a remake of Angélique was upcoming, all eyes were on who was going to be the Angélique, taking over Michèle Mercier - France’s other sex-symbol of the 60’s alongside Brigitte Bardot. The movie was expensive and ambitious but was a big flop at the French box-office. But once again, Nora Arnezeder’s performance was praised by critics. |In spite of this little hick-up, Nora had a glowing career waiting for her in America. She became a regular on not one, but two popular TV shows.
She first appeared in 2014, Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman’s TV show Mozart in the Jungle. It was Amazon Prime’s first hit, earning two Golden Globes and two Emmy Awards. In Mozart in the Jungle, Noza Arnezeder had a recurring role: Ana Maria, Gael García Bernal’s estranged violinist wife. A year later, she was one of the stars of CBS highly-anticipated dystopian drama called Zoo. In this story about a mysterious coordinated outbreak of attacks from animals upon humans, Nora Arnezeder played Chloe Tousignant, a French intelligence agent in charge of investigating what prompted this dark event. The first season of Zoo was the massive hit CBS hoped for. Eight million Americans tuned in for the first episode. On average, Zoo drew six million viewers for the rest of the season, regularly beating NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Season 2 of Zoo still garnered decent ratings, although dipped around four million on average. The show was canceled by CBS after season 3, but Netflix picked up the streaming rights, which brought new popularity to the series.
More recently, Nora Arnezeder has been known for her skills at fighting zombies! After having a series of physical roles, like in Maniac where she escapes a serial killer, she was cast as one of the leads in Army of the Dead. This was no small production. The movie was directed by Zach Snyder, the mind behind Watchmen, 300, and Man of Steel and. Netflix was backing up the movie, in what was one of their first ventures into the blockbuster genre. A badass by nature as she admits, Nora Arnezeder was sent with the rest of the cast to a zombie boot camp! “We learned how to use weapons”, confessed Nora Arnezeder in her interview for TV5MONDE. The boot camp was not for nothing as it’s clear from Army of the Dead that she has a real talent at killing zombies! She is almost unrecognizable on-screen with her bleached hair and all-black apocalypse inspired outfit.
Her latest role was in the highly regarded miniseries The Offer, available on Paramount +. The biographical drama is centered on chaos behind-the-scenes of the production of Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece The Godfather. The show received very positive reviews and was praised for its cast, among them Miles Teller, Matthew Goode, Colin Hanks and Giovanni Ribisi. In The Offer, Nora Arnezeder is Françoise Ruddy - born Françoise Wizenberg, and also known as Françoise Glazer and Ma Prem Hasya. She was the wife of The Godfather’s producer, the former owner of Château Marmont, and the personal secretary of Bhagwan, also known as Osho, the leader of the movement turned cult featured in Netflix’s Wild Wild West.
Her upcoming roles are in two action flicks. First, Brad Furman’s Tin Soldier with Jamie Foxx and Robert de Niro. Then American Star, an English thriller with Ian McShane and Fanny Ardant, which should be released in 2023.
