Lambert Wilson is 64 years old, as of 2023. He was born on August 3rd, 1958.
Lambert Wilson's career has been marked by his willingness to take on a wide range of roles and his love for intimate dramas as well as popular comedies. Lambert Wilson is well-known in France for his role in the biopic of l’Abbé Pierre, Hiver 54, for Charles de Gaulle in De Gaulle, and for his collaboration with French director Alain Resnais. They worked on many films together, including the box-office hit On connaît la chanson - which was awarded Best film at the 1997 Césars ceremony. Lambert Wilson always dreamed of a career in the U.S. and was cast in a few Hollywood movies.
To American audiences, he will always be known for his role of The Merovingian in Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions, and for the famous scene in which he delicately curses in French, glass of wine in hand.

Biography
Lambert Wilson was brought up in a creative and artistic environment. His dad, Georges Wilson, was a play director and an actor appearing in many films, including the war 60’s blockbuster The Longest Day, as well as the classic French movies La Jument Verte and Le Château de ma mère. Early on, Lambert Wilson would spend his time off school backstage at his dad’s theater set, often talking to actors and directors. He didn’t want to follow exactly into his father's footsteps, the French theater industry didn’t interest him much at first. Lambert Wilson dreamed of being a Hollywood superstar. “The star-system came to my head. I wanted to see my face on the big screen, act in big productions and become Robert Redford”, said the French actor in a 2010 interview for Télérama.
He quickly realized that stage was a natural start to becoming an actor. So he began performing in school plays and local theater productions. He then left Paris for London to study at the Drama Centre London. First, this was to try to make it without the help of his father, but also with the hope that learning English would help him land roles in British movies. The experience was not as successful or fulfilling as he had hoped, and he returned to France to be a comedian in plays where his father was involved as an actor or director.
Lambert Wilson began his acting career in the late 70’s. He landed small roles in French and American movies. His very first one was in Fred Zinnemann’s Julia. The director, convinced by Lambert Wilson’s potential, would cast him in the title role of his next movie Five Days One Summer, starring opposite Sean Connery. What Lambert Wilson thought would be the start of his career in Hollywood ended up being a massive flop at the box-office, followed by another flop, Sahara, this time with Brooke Shields.
The failure of the two movies convinced him to move back to France and try to make it in his own country. He appeared in a few films, never as the lead, but enough to get a call back for more roles until 1985, when André Téchnié cast him in Rendez-vous. This role got him his first nomination at the Césars for best actor. He quickly made a name for himself in the French film industry as the stud, a sort of James Dean with charm and wit. So much so that he came really close to replacing Roger Moore as James Bond in 1986 for The Living Daylights, Bond’s 15th adventure. He was one of the last seven to be considered for the role, alongside Sam Neill and Pierce Brosnan. The producer Albert R. Broccoli really wanted him but the director and other producers decided to give the role to Timothy Dalton.
Determined to not play ‘the pretty boy’ throughout his entire career, he took on more difficult and complex roles. The 90’s were his defining years as he established himself as a prominent figure in the French film industry. That’s also when he started his long collaboration with director Alain Resnais with On connait la chanson (1997), Lambert Wilson’s most acclaimed films. The musical, in which Lambert Wilson can showcase his suave voice, won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and 7 César awards, including Best film. Lambert Wilson was also nominated for his performance in On connait la chanson but the César went to his co-star in the film Jean-Pierre Bacri. The 2000’s were really a testament to Lambert Wilson’s versatility as an actor. He appeared in more critically acclaimed dramas by Alain Resnais (Pas sur la bouche, Cœurs), as well as box-office comedies despised by the same press (Jet Set, HS Service, L’anniversaire). The decade also marked his return to Hollywood. Now a successful actor in France, Lambert Wilson tried his luck once more at making it in America. He made his Hollywood comeback in The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003) as the character "The Merovingian". His over the top, mesmerizing monologue gained him real recognition among fans of the Matrix saga. He then went to be cast in Catwoman (2004), another movie titled Sahara and Mathieu Kassovitz’ ambitious but flawed sci-fi movie Babylon A.D..
In 2010, he was nominated (and lost) a sixth time for the César award for best actor for his role in Of Gods and Men. He also landed roles in many other successful French movies: Sur la piste du Marsupilami, Alceste à bicyclette, Barbecue, La Vache. He received praise for two biopics, L’Odyssée, in which he played oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, and Charles de Gaulle in Gabriel Le Bomin’s De Gaulle. He also appeared in the highly regarded dramedy with Isabelle Huppert and Vincent Lacoste Tout de suite maintenant, available on TV5MONDE USA.
