Le tunnel du Gothard, le chantier du siècle - Watch Swiss Documentaries on TV5MONDE
The Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland (“Gothard” in French) was the longest railway tunnel in the world when it opened in 1882, with 15.003 kilometres (9.322 mi) of track, facilitating a much higher volume of trans-alpine transportation in Europe than was previously possible. This amazing piece of architecture was the brainchild of Louis Favre, who created innovative designs and technologies for the project.
Despite the positive effect on European circulation, this tunnel — a symbol of progress and design in that era — came at a great price. Working and health conditions were so bad that the tunnel’s construction caused 300 workers to suffer accidents and 900 to become ill. Geological problems claimed the lives of around 200 laborers. A memorial near the station building at Airolo honors the memory of all those who died in the construction of the Gotthard Tunnel.
